The truth is, those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are among our society’s most vulnerable. Those with ASD are already misunderstood because of the likely difficulties with social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication often characterized by ASD.

Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

For a whole boatload of reasons (not just autism or mental illness or cultural differences or the environments in which we were brought up), many of us have difficulty expressing ourselves, communicating appropriately with others, and responding to social queues. But no matter what the reason, the truth is we all just want to be understood. We all want people to see and experience our goodness, but it’s not always that easy.
